Description: These data are for areas important to wildlife in the western Northwest Territories. The areas are based on discussions during 2006 to 2009 with communities, co-management boards, departmental staff, and others as well as review of available reports. Using specific criteria, key wildlife habitat areas were identified for barren-ground caribou, mountain woodland caribou, Peary caribou, Dolphin-Union caribou, Dall’s sheep, moose, mountain goat, muskox, wood bison, beaver, grizzly bear, polar bear, lynx, marten, muskrat, western toad, and peregrine falcon. Unique areas including warm and hot springs and mineral licks that are important for multiple species were also identified. The methodology, rationale, supporting information and maps are provided in Wilson and Haas (2012).
